If you are a Canadian citizen, you will only need your passport to enter the USA. If you are other than Canadian, check the US requirements for nationals of whatever country of which you are a citizen,
If it is just a transit, and you do not leave the secured area, you will not need a US visa.
If your nationality is other than Canadian, make sure that you will not need a visa to get into Mexico.
Are you carrying a Canadian passport, if so you do not need a visa to enter the US. If you are from a country that require a Visa to enter the US, then yes you will need a Visa. After 9-11, there is no such thing as a transit in the US anymore.
If you are thinking its similar like transitting in Japan, the US do not have those anymore.
