Yes. Since you would be leaving the US and entering Mexico.This is one of the new travel rules that started in January 2008.

You may be able to get into Mexico, but you won’t be able to get back without one.

You got 5 wrong answers in a row…notice none gave a supporting reference? There is a great deal of misinformation being given about this. NO…you do NOT need a passport to travel to Mexico by Land. You need a photo I.D. and a proof of citizenship…EITHER a passport OR a birth certificate. See site below for current , correct info.
