By land, to get into mexico u really don’t need anything but if ur planning on coming back to the US u need an id and birth certificate.
By land until 2009 a photo ID ,by air, a passport.
Mexico is aware of our laws - they abide by them when Americans enter.
The border patrol will want to see your ID both ways
Flying? you wont even make it ON the plane w/o a passport from the states or Mexico.
To travel to and from Mexico by Land or Sea, you need a photo I.D. and a birth certificate. To FLY , you need a passport. See site below.
Mexico doesn’t require anything. It’s all the US.
