Traveling from Albuquerque to San Miguel de Allende. Any advice?
I will be driving from Albuquerque to San Miguel de Allende in central Mexico. It will be just me and another woman. I have never been to this part of Mexico and was looking for some advice on what cities we should stay in and where along the way we can fill up the gas tank. I understand there are stretches (like I-10 through western Texas) where there are little or no amenities. We are considering traveling from Albuquerque to Chihuahua in one day, Chihuahua to Aguascalientes the next day and then onto San Miguel de Allende on the 3rd day. Also it should be noted that I speak limited Spanish and my travel companion speaks no Spanish at all. We will be traveling to visit a friend in San Miguel and bringing a lot of ceramic artwork such as large vases with us. Neither of us have done a road trip through Mexico before although we have traveled by road through parts of the US. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!
To clarify, the ceramic work we’re taking is my work to be exhibited in my friends’s gallery. I juest mentioned it so that it is clear that it is two women with little knowledge of Spanish traveling with a lot of expensive artwork. Sorry I didn’t initially give more details.

According to news stories and the official U.S. Internet travel site, Monterrey, Mexico has become a haven for drug gangs and petty thieves with little to no law enforcement.
Are these Internet stories true?
How safe is it to travel to Monterrey, Mexico?
If you have any specific comments or suggestions or stories, I would be interested in hearing them.
Thanks.
Thanks for the comments. All are appreciated. Reading the official U.S. government travel site to Mexico, it repeatedly mentions Monterrey as a problem area unlike most other larger cities in Mexico because of the many petty criminals who get away with crimes only because of the larger drug gang violence which has made burglaries, robberies, kidnapping (to empty out a bank account using an ATM card), kidnappings just to get a few thousand dollars from relatives, etc… which are all are being reported on the official U.S. government travel site. But, I was just wondering how accurate this informtion is.
For example, I know a person working in law enforcement in Laredo who says violence is significantly down in 2007 in Nuevo Laredo compared to 2006 while the official U.S. government travel site to Mexico states the opposite. I was just trying to get a better picture of things. Thanks again.

Can you still travel TO mexico with a birth certificate from the US?
I know you can reenter the US with a birth certificate until 2009, but what does Mexico require? What do you need to leave the US and get into Mexico?

Can I travel to Mexico by land without a passport?
I am planning to travel to Mexico by land this May, however I do not have a passport. Will my state ID and birth certificate be sufficient to enter Mexico and then come to the U.S. by land?
